Parabens…..Friend or Foe?

We have all used parabens at some point in our everyday lives, more than we realize in fact. They are in lotions and body creams, cosmetics (lipsticks, foundations and other makeup) hair care products (shampoos, conditioners, styling products etc.) and body scrubs, just to name a few. What are “parabens” and what’s all the talk about? Let’s explore the world of parabens.

Parabens are a type of preservative that is added to products to prevent the other ingredients from going rancid and to prevent bacteria, mold and fungal growth in the product. There are several forms of parabens including butylparaben, methylparaben and propylparaben. Typically the amounts are very small, usually the last few ingredients on the ingredient label. Normally, like most things in life, are good in moderation. But new research has discovered that parabens are now found in 99% of breast cancer cells by causing an estrogen like reaction in the body that initiate cellular changes in breast cells. There are many different views on the topic of parabens and cancer.
To paraben or not to paraben? Basically, it comes down to a personal decision.  If we follow a moderation rule in general, then common risks are greatly reduced. You can also reduce your risk of over exposure by using product that are paraben free. Many companies now have made a priority to eliminate all parabens from their products. Always look at the label, if any ingredient contains the word “paraben” in any shape or form….. it is not paraben free.
